Restful Healing: The Art of Finding Stillness in a Chaotic World

Writer's picture: Vanessa HarrisVanessa Harris

If you’re anything like me, finding stillness can feel like trying to catch your breath in a windstorm. For years, I was swept up in the current of hustle culture, believing that my worth was tied to my productivity. Between juggling responsibilities, striving for perfection, and navigating the turbulence of life, I had forgotten what it felt like to simply be.

But stillness found me when I needed it most.

In 2022, life brought me to my knees. I faced the loss of my parents, a separation, and ultimately, a divorce. My world had been turned upside down, and for the first time, I couldn’t outrun the chaos. There were days I couldn’t do much more than sit in silence, staring at the walls of my home. Yet, in those still moments, something began to shift. Slowly, I realized that I wasn’t falling apart; I was being reassembled.

An important part of my emotional recovery was allowing myself space to rest without guilt. I said no to more things than I would have liked, spent a lot of time doing nothing at home, and kept my work life as minimal as possible. It wasn’t easy to resist the pull of productivity, but those moments of stillness were exactly what I needed to heal. I began to understand that rest is not laziness, it is a form of healing and renewal.

What is Restful Healing?

Restful healing is the process of allowing the body and mind to recover and rejuvenate through intentional rest. It’s about giving yourself permission to pause without guilt or judgment. Scientifically, rest has profound effects on the body and mind. Studies show that adequate rest can reduce cortisol levels (a key stress hormone), improve cognitive function, and strengthen the immune system. Restful practices such as mindfulness, deep breathing, and sleep activate the parasympathetic nervous system, also known as the "rest and digest" mode, which is essential for repair and recovery.

Incorporating restful healing into your life means redefining rest as productive. Not in the sense of doing, but in the sense of being. It’s recognizing that rest is an essential part of growth, creativity, and emotional resilience. You do it on vacation, why not integrate it into your daily life?

Why Stillness Matters

Stillness is a radical act in a world that demands constant motion. It’s not about doing nothing; it’s about creating space for clarity, connection, and healing. When we pause, we invite ourselves to listen to our breath, our thoughts, and the wisdom that lives deep within us.

For me, stillness has been the key to rediscovering balance. It’s where I learned to release the need for perfection and embrace intention instead. And it’s how I began to rebuild my life with curiosity and compassion as my compass.

Simple Practices to Cultivate Restful Stillness

Finding stillness doesn’t mean escaping to the ocean-side (though that would be nice!). It can be woven into the fabric of your everyday life. These practices have helped me carve out moments of quiet amidst the noise:

  1. The One-Minute Pause I’ll never forget the first time I intentionally stopped everything and just focused on my breath. It was during a hectic workday when anxiety felt like a tidal wave. I closed my eyes, inhaled deeply for four counts, held for four counts, and exhaled for six. Sixty seconds later, the storm inside me had calmed.

  2. Mindful Walks Walking has always been my go-to for clearing my head. Now, I leave my phone behind and focus on the rhythm of my steps, the sound of the wind, and the feeling of the sun on my skin. It’s like pressing reset for my soul.

  3. Gratitude Journaling After losing so much, I struggled to see the beauty in my life. A simple practice of writing down three things I was grateful for each day helped shift my perspective. It doesn’t erase pain, but it makes room for joy.

  4. Body Scan Meditation On restless nights, I lie down and guide my attention through my body starting at my toes and working up to the crown of my head. I let go of tension I didn’t even know I was holding. It’s become my favourite way to wind down before bed.

  5. Permission to Do Nothing One of the hardest lessons I learned was giving myself permission to do nothing without guilt. Whether it’s sitting quietly, watching the clouds, or sipping tea without distractions, these moments of intentional rest are profoundly restorative.

Bringing Stillness Into Your Life

Start small. Maybe it’s a five-minute pause in the morning before the day begins or a quiet moment with your tea before the chaos of dinner. Consistency matters more than duration. Over time, these moments of stillness add up, creating a foundation of peace in your life.

For me, stillness is now part of how I live, work, and show up in the world. It’s a practice, not a destination, and it’s one I hope you’ll explore for yourself.

Closing Thoughts

Stillness helped save me when I didn’t know how to save myself. It taught me to be present, to feel deeply, and to honor the unfolding of my path. And it continues to be my anchor as I navigate life’s waves.
